The Games People Play

Breaking the Sound Barrier

The Games People Play

SOURCE Well Co Ltd, a distributing and exporting company founded in 1981, has introduced a dice game consisting of six dice behind a glass window in a "beer can''. The Original Dice Game is a replica of a beer can on which buyers can have their logos printed. It is aimed mainly at breweries so they can print names of their beers.

"It's a cheating game that requires two or more players," sales manager Noel Cheung says. Each player shakes his can and hides the result of the dice. The other players must then guess the total in each opponent's can. Every guess must be higher than the last.

"If one player doesn't believe the last call, he yells 'cheat' and everyone must show the scores in the windows. But the person calling the bluff loses if the last call is correct or higher."

The players who lose must drink. Beer company representatives, however, remain clear-headed. "We discussed the idea with them and they liked the concept," Cheung says.

"Putting their logo on the can works as an excellent advertising strategy. The game is quite popular in the Chinese market, and we've had many enquiries from European markets too."

Delivery time after order confirmation is 30 days and the minimum order size is 3,000 units. The unit price is US$2.

Breaking the Sound Barrier

FOR drivers who want their standard saloon cars to sound like sports cars, Hing Yu Metal Works Ltd's has the answer Ä an after-market exhaust system silencer.

"This muffler [exhaust silencer] is a performance muffler," executive director Maria Cheung says. "You swap the original design for the performance muffler and the sedan will become something like a sports car."

"The design gives the car extra pick-up [acceleration] power. It also increases the vehicle's [overall] speed and the noise mimics the sound of a sports car," Cheung explains.

Hing Yu's history is similar to that of the car Ä from simple origins, both have developed into something highly technical and sophis-ticated. Founded in 1947, the company initially repaired and recon-ditioned old and dam-aged machinery left over from the ravages of World War II.

The production of car accessories began in 1967, when Hing Yu began exporting radiator caps, fuel caps and wheel covers. But it was not until 1981, fuelled by the strategy to broaden its sales base, that Hing Yu ventured into exhaust system manufacturing.

The company has since injected considerable time into sound control and silencer construction, culminating in the Sports Muffler. The silencer is available for the Daihatsu Charade, Honda Civic, Mazda Astina, Mitsubishi Lancer, the Nissan NX and Toyota Corolla and Levin.

"We designed our own series to fit the market here and then we expanded to incorporate other markets," Cheung says.

Each month, 25,000 units are sold to Kuwait, Bahrain, North and South America, Hong Kong and Singapore. Delivery time after order confir-mation, with the silencers carrying the brand name Soundrite, is 14 days.
