PAINLESS PEELING

New ideas are the forte of Jeremy Cheung, director of Youngson Asia Ltd, a company that describes itself as an innovative products manufacturer. The company's latest product, the Potato Skin Peeling Glove, is a little different from its usual range of hair, beauty and health products.

Cheung believes that the rubber gloves, which make peeling easier, are ideal for all homes. "The potato peeling gloves makes scraping fruit and vegetables as easy as washing dishes. Also, the gloves dispense with the need to use special peelers, or a knife where there is the possibility of cutting yourself," Cheung says.

The gloves, which come in one size that fits all, have special plastic pieces attached to the finger and palm areas. "We spent several months testing different designs until we came up with the right degree of abrasion. As both gloves feature the abrasive pads, it only takes seconds to peel any type of fruit or vegetable," Cheung says.

At present, the gloves come only in yellow. However, as OEM is a major part of Youngson's business, it is happy to accommodate customers' designs or logos.

The gloves sell for US$1.20 FOB Hong Kong a pair, with a minimum order of 3,000 pairs. This can be reduced to US$0.80 for orders of 50,000 pairs or more. Delivery usually takes 45 days after order confirmation.

The potato peeling gloves have proved popular in Europe. According to Cheung, the response has been overwhelming and Youngson has received enquiries from all over the world. Direct-mail companies and kitchenware specialists have been the main customers so far. "We have our own 130,000-square-foot factory in southern China with 850 employees, and our own injection moulds. Therefore, we can assure clients of the best quality, competitive prices, and delivery at the earliest possible date," Cheung says.

SPACE FOR SPECS

EYEGLASSES, whether they be sunglasses, spectacles or reading glasses, need special care if they are to be of any use to their owner. A newly developed eyeglasses organiser from Keen's Products Ltd helps to protect and store these delicate items in an easily transportable and attractive carrying case.

"I developed the organiser for my wife," says general manager Alfred Tam. "She had several pairs of sunglasses, but she always had difficulty finding the particular pair she wanted to wear that day. Now with the organiser, it only takes her a few seconds to find the glasses she wants."

The organisers come in two formats: one for home use, which can hold four or six pairs of glasses, and another one for outdoor use that offers multifunction compartments for sunglasses, as well as other accessories such as cosmetics, a book or suntan oil. The bags are made with German synthetic leather and come in three colours -- bright yellow, cobalt blue and black. Each bag contains a cleaning cloth and two small screwdrivers for quick repairs.

"We can make bags and organisers in any type of material or any colour," continues Tam. "Most of our business is OEM work, so we are very experienced in sourcing a wide variety of materials to fulfil customers' requirements.

"Our major clients are well-known sunglasses manufacturers and producers of electrical goods. Complete customer satisfaction is our company's goal, and we are currently working toward ISO 9002 accreditation. We work hard to satisfy the needs of all our customers, small and large alike."

The company's head office and showroom are located in Hong Kong, and the production facilities are in Dongguan, mainland China. The factory employs 300 workers, and has facilities for ultrasound welding, gold stamping and silk-screen printing.

Tam sees Europe and the US as the major markets for the eyeglasses organiser. Prices for the organisers range from US$3.60 to US$3.80 FOB Hong Kong, and the minimum order is 1,000 units. Delivery takes 40 days after confirmation of order.
