Neo-Neon Int'l Ltd produces decorative lighting under the Duralight and Durafiber brands. |
WITH Christmas now celebrated the world over, Hong Kong suppliers are producing a vast array of decorations for this major festival.
Among the decorative Christmas lighting produced by Neon King Ltd is a range of three-dimensional deer, sleigh and snowman figures. "A snowman can be made to a maximum height of three metres or reduced to 0.8 metres in accordance with a customer's requirements," says marketing manager Rebecca Tong.
According to Tong, tailor-made 3-D motifs are usually used for commercial displays, street decoration and home or garden decoration. The items run on AC current. Minimum order is about 100 units per model and shipment normally takes one month after order confirmation.
"We also make 3-D Santa Claus lights. Some models can even move," Tong notes. "We can make basic Christmas lights and we also undertake special projects."
Tong points out that every Christmas Neon King is responsible for the decorative lighting of a major Spanish department store.
"We make lights in many different styles, whether they are 3-D models or light strings. We are innovative and can come up with the previously unimaginable. For example, we can use lights to create a forest or an ocean," Tong says.
Materials used in production - such as plastic, wire, glue and filament - are sourced from Japan, Taiwan and France.
Neon King was established in 1977 and is ISO 9002-certified. Major export markets are France, Italy, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan and the US. The company's 10,000-worker factories in Zhuhai on the Chinese mainland have a total factory space of 1.3 million square feet. Tong says Neon King's products meet such international safety standards as CB, GS, CE, UL and CSA.
Greenfield Holdings & Mfrs Ltd produces a range of Christmas trees and trimmings using PVC and PE sourced mainly from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan. One example is a seven-foot, green Augusta fir Christmas tree with 1,100 tips. Average monthly production of this item is 500. The company also has an average monthly production of 8,000 units of Christmas trimmings.
According to manager Richard Tse, minimum order is a full TEU of assorted models. Shipment is 30-60 days after order confirmation. Greenfield designs its own products but also produces on an OEM basis.
Greenfield was founded in 1958 and sells mainly to the US, Germany, the UK and Australia. Its ISO 9002-certified factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland has a floor area of 27,000 square metres and a staff of 950 workers.
Among the latest designs from Desiree Co Ltd is a snowman trinket box and a snowman figurine, both in cheerful colours. Sales manager Tommy Ho says the company's products are made of polyresin and wire sourced from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan. Minimum order is 1,000 units per item. Lead time is 45 days after order confirmation. Major markets are the US, Europe, Canada and Japan.
Desiree was established in 1985 and has a 1,500-worker factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland. The company produces items of its own design but also takes OEM orders.
An animated and musical line featuring Santa Claus, a snowman and a reindeer graces the catalogue of Kiu Hung Int'l Enterprises Ltd. Each of the nine-inch-tall items runs on three AAA batteries. They are made from plush and fabric sourced from the Chinese mainland.
"These products can move about and sing Christmas songs, thus giving a true Christmas feeling," says director Danny Hui.
Kiu Hung makes a water globe that contains imitation snowflakes, snow-capped trees and houses. "Press the button and the snowflakes swirl," says Hui. The water globe is made from polyresin sourced from Taiwan and runs on two AA batteries.
Minimum order is a full TEU of assorted models and shipment is 45-90 days after order confirmation. Kiu Hung's major markets are the US, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.
Kiu Hung was set up in 1991 and has two ISO 9001-certified factories in Fujian Province on the Chinese mainland with a total staff of 1,600 workers. The company makes products of its own design but also takes OEM orders.
From Golden Peak Plastic Works Ltd comes a Christmas musical turntable with a train. Priced at US$4.10 FOB Hong Kong, the turntable features a Christmas tree, a snowman, a bear and several gift boxes on a round platform surrounded by a railway. "After you wind it up, the train moves and Christmas music is played," says sales manager Timothy Kwok.
Golden Peak was founded in 1975 and has an ISO 9002-certified, 150,000-square-foot factory in Bao'an on the southern Chinese mainland, staffed by 500-700 workers.
Golden Peak also makes Christmas decorations modelled after Santa Claus and a snowman, and this includes penholders and other ornaments.
The polystyrene used in production is sourced from the US and Japan, and the ICs come from Taiwan. Minimum order value is US$10,000. Shipment is 30-45 days after order confirmation. Major markets are the US, Europe and Japan.
"Half of our products are OEM items. We design the other half," Kwok stresses.

| Hunter Group Ltd's stainless steel tableware includes fruit baskets and double-wall coffee cups, all with a satin finish for a touch of class. |
TABLEWARE is one market sector that has grown impressively in the last few years. Hong Kong manufacturers are responding to the worldwide demand for designs that revolve around a lifestyle theme and offer both style and functionality.
Gold Wo Melamine Product Co Ltd demonstrates its design abilities with its iris-theme melamine tableware range, which includes a tray with handle, a small round tray, a 10-inch plate, a seven-inch bowl, a tumbler and a soup bowl. FOB Hong Kong prices for this group vary from US$0.32 to US$2.30 each.
This Hong Kong-listed company was founded in 1995 and manufactures household products, gifts and premiums. It has a minimum order of 5,000 pieces and can ship in 35 days. It exports principally to the UK, France, Denmark, the US and other Asian countries.
Gold Wo imports melamine from Taiwan into the Chinese mainland, where it has a 700-worker factory. "We have a 12-person design department, where we can offer clients a range of new styles or work with them on their own OEM projects," says sales executive Kenneth Wong. "Flexibility of design is a powerful sales tool."
>From Bunhoi Co Ltd comes a rich variety of 18/8 stainless steel cutlery, with items such as cheese and cake cutters, children's cutlery and sets for serving fish and salads. A four-piece tableware cutlery set sells for about US$1.20 FOB Hong Kong.
Other products include kitchen tools, gadgets and cookware. The principal raw material, 18/8 stainless steel, comes from Japan. Minimum order is 6,000 pieces per item for shipment in 60-75 days. Bunhoi's major markets are Germany, the US, Italy and France. Founded in 1978, the company has its head office in Hong Kong and a 600-worker factory on the Chinese mainland.
"Design is so important today. Any company in this business must stay abreast of current trends. We do this by consulting customers and getting feedback at trade fairs. This gives us many ideas such as colours and direction," says managing director Harry Jackson Wong.

Man Chuen Metal & Iron Works Ltd demonstrates mastery of niche production with its range of stainless steel coffee cups, teacups, pots and coffee plungers.
Man Chuen has been making stainless steel tableware and kitchenware since 1984. It has a delivery cycle of 60-90 days, with major markets in the UK, Germany, Switzerland and Australia. It sources stainless steel from Japan and manufactures at a 320-worker factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland.

Household Electronics
![]() |
| A deep-fat fryer (left) and electronic facial sauna (right) prove the diversity of Anex Electrical Co Ltd's household and grooming products. |
MODERN homes in most countries are increasingly full of household electronics. Despite the innovative nature and increasing sophistication of these products, this proliferation can be attributed to lower manufacturing costs. Hong Kong suppliers with factories on the Chinese mainland make products specifically for this fast-growing segment of the consumer market.
Wang Chun Plastic Industrial Ltd specializes in compact household kitchenware, including electric knives, mini-choppers, hand-mixers and can-openers, usually with ABS housing and double-insulated power cords.
Established in 1988, Wang Chun employs 450 workers at its factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. Its motto is "good quality, low price and customer satisfaction", says managing director Ng Chau Suen. Seven years ago Wang Chun achieved ISO 9002 quality certification.
Prices depend on such factors as quantity, approvals and cord or plug types, Ng says. Shipment is about 45 days after order confirmation. Wang Chun's main markets are in Europe (notably Germany and Italy), the US, Japan and New Zealand.
Anex Electrical Co Ltd makes electrical appliances, beauty and health-care products, auto accessories, fluorescent items and personal-security devices.
"We manufacture more than 200 models of electrical appliances, including toasters, coffee makers, blenders-cum-choppers, hand-mixers, irons, knives, water boilers, hair dryers and vacuum cleaners," says marketing manager Winnie Kwok.
Twenty-seven-year-old Anex Electrical listed on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong in 1991 and three years later secured ISO 9001 certification. Plastics and other raw materials arrive at its 1,800-worker factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland from throughout the mainland and South Korea.
Anex sells mainly to Western Europe, the US and Southeast Asia. Prices depend on the product type, model and order details. Minimum order is 3,000 pieces for private labels (1,000 pieces for standard models) for shipment 45 days after order confirmation.
"We offer a wide range of ODM products - about 300 models - from which customers can select. Every year we launch about 10 new models to increase our range," Kwok says.
"The designs are innovative and unique because we have a strong research and development department in both Hong Kong and on the Chinese mainland. OEM projects are a major part of our business too. We also have our own tooling shop, so we can provide a full-service portfolio to customers," Kwok adds.
Ginfax Development Ltd produces household optical items like cameras and scopes, along with electronics-cum-electrical items like ozone air purifiers, mini-dehumidifiers and wine-bottle coolers/warmers, all on an OEM or ODM basis.
Established in 1990, Ginfax is ISO 9001-certified, maintains offices in Hong Kong and Shenzhen and operates two factories in Guangdong. Monthly production capacity exceeds two million units.
Plastics, metals and other raw materials come from the Chinese mainland. Clients in the US, Europe and Japan buy the finished products.
"Order size can vary depending on products and specifications. We can ship 45-60 days after order confirmation," says marketing executive Christine Tang.
Housely Industries Ltd offers remote-controlled wall fans, standing fans, box fans and tower fans; oil-filled radiators; and air ventilators with high-efficiency thermal exchangers and air filters.
This 13-year-old company employs 2,000 workers at its factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland. The factory's daily production capacity is 20,000 units. Raw materials like ABS and sheet metal come from South Korea, Taiwan and the mainland, says marketing director John Lai.
Housely's products often display Housely's Regent brand and cost US$20-200 FOB Hong Kong, depending on the item, model and specifications. For a single model, the minimum order is one FEU for shipment within 45 days after receiving a letter of credit.
Housely Industries has ISO 9002 certification and serves a strong customer base in Europe and the US.

Aromatic Gifts
![]() |
| Sunrise Industrial Co's aromatic products include candle burners and incense cone holders. They sell well in Europe and the US. |
Stressed-out workers will find comfort in the finely fragranced mouse pads made by Flamingo Gifts Creation Ltd. These pads are designed to freshen up the workplace and add colour and fun to the desktop. The pads come in a variety of shapes, colours and aromas. According to managing director Angela Lau, flower and fruit aromas are the most popular.
Flamingo once made perfumed pads to promote a new fragrance from a major perfume house. The company also made mint-fragranced Mickey Mouse pads for Disney Corp. For night owls, there are pads that glow in the dark and glitter on the inside.
Pads cost US$1 FOB Hong Kong for a minimum order of 1,000 pieces. Shipment usually takes 3-4 weeks. "The price can come down to US$0.50 for a larger order," says Lau.
Flamingo also makes fragranced coasters. "We made some coasters for a tea company once and infused them with the same smell as the tea," says Lau. "We are a very flexible team. You submit the design and we will make it."
Flamingo's major market is Japan, but the company is keen to venture beyond, particularly into the European market.
Incense-burning is a common practice in homes and temples around Asia and has become a popular fashion trend in Europe and the US. At the forefront of this trend is High Prosper Int'l Ltd, a manufacturer and exporter of incense products for more than 30 years.
"People are increasingly burning incense at their dining tables and during meditations - even in the workplace. It is a new fashion and business is very good," says High Prosper's manager Carol Wong.
High Prosper makes the incense from wood powder and imported oils at its two factories on the Chinese mainland. The fragrance oil is imported from Europe, and this - according to Wong - ensures that the company's products are of the best quality.
High Prosper makes products under its own Incensia and SpiritCore brand names, but also welcomes customers' designs. Price depends on order quantity and the type of perfume and packaging required. Wong stresses that High Prosper's products range from the low price range through to luxury items. Shipment depends on quantities, but usually takes 30-60 days after order confirmation.
Wise Choice Int'l Ltd offers some of the best value for money in the aromatic gift market. This company produces a full range of gift sets, comprising bath lotions, shower gels and soap. These sets include sponges and brushes. The soap base is imported from Malaysia and France, while the basketry is sourced from the Chinese mainland. A set costs US$2-10 FOB Hong Kong.
According to manager Nelson Woo, economies of scale enable the company to keep costs low. "We ship 3-5 containers of our products to the US at a time. This enables us to import large quantities of manufacturing materials at a lower cost," says Woo.
Wise Choice sells mainly to the US, Europe, Japan and Malaysia, but is trying to develop the Middle East market. The company has its own in-house designer, who designs original products as well as working closely with clients on OEM projects. "If a client demands high quality ingredients, we can use natural-flower and plant extracts. We have a wide range of fragrances available, such as all the flower fragrances and even special aromatic sensations like chocolate and milk," says Woo.
Products are tested to US and EC approved standards before shipment. Minimum order is 10,000 pieces and shipment usually takes 45 days after order confirmation.
Lutex Co Ltd is a prolific producer of exciting toiletry goods. Lutex launches 13 ranges of new products each year, and this comprises nearly 500 new items. The company's success is a culmination of 60 years' experience in the business combined with a modern innovative approach and excellent customer relations.
The oriental-spa range of products combines sophisticated packaging with an exotic ethnic feel. "These gifts sets are particularly popular in such places as the US and Europe, where people are familiar with the spa concept," says marketing executive Yvonne Chu.
Lutex has its own laboratories and a highly trained team of designers and marketing and merchandising professionals. Production is carried out at the company's 1,000-worker factory on the Chinese mainland. "We are constantly updating our machinery and exploring new innovative production processes," says Chu. Shipment is normally 30-60 days after order confirmation.

Wallets & Cases
![]() |
| Fashion-conscious women carry these colourful purses (top and right) and coin holders (bottom left) from Shui Lung Leather Product Ltd.. |
Top-grain leather wallets in black, brown, red or camel for men and women form Colliloy Industrial Ltd's best-selling line. This OEM and private-label supplier also makes key-cases, coin purses, stationery folders and organisers.
Four hundred workers at the 13-year-old company's factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland produce 80,000 pieces monthly for export to North America, Australia and Europe.
"Half our products are made of leather while the others are PU, PVC or fabric. We see a rising interest in such combinations as PU or fabric with leather," says director Lawrence Liu.
Men's wallets remain slim and simple in style, but women demand more credit-card slots and billfold separators. "Stitching is more popular too," Liu adds.
Women's leather wallets (12-14x10cm) cost US$3-7 FOB Hong Kong per piece compared with US$2-6 for men's models (10x9cm). Minimum order is 2,000 pieces per colour for shipment within 45-60 days.
Shui Lung Leather Product Ltd, a Hong Kong-Japanese joint venture, offers medium-priced classic leather wallets for less than US$10 FOB Hong Kong each. Leather key-cases cost US$3-6 FOB Hong Kong while coin purses are US$4-8. The five-year-old company also makes PVC and nylon articles.
"Imitation reptile-skin products using split leather sell well, as do women's items in purple, pink or yellow," says representative Doreen Tse.
Shui Lung is an OEM supplier active in the Japanese market and has plans to expand into the US, Europe and more of Asia.
Six hundred workers at its 10,000-square-metre factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland can produce 150,000 pieces monthly. Later this year the company will introduce three of its own brands: Likkay (for higher-end men's and women's leather goods); Morishui (for medium-priced women's leather items); and Candonnini (for split-leather and nylon articles).
Minimum order is 1,000 pieces, but this is negotiable. Depending on quantity and special requirements, shipment is 20-40 days after order confirmation.
At Ping Man Leather & Plastic Hand Bag Co Ltd, such stationery-related items as business-card holders, document cases and stationery portfolios account for 60% of sales. Smoking accessories (cigarette cases, cigar cases and tobacco pouches) constitute 30%. Wallets provide the remaining 10%.
Founded in 1933, Ping Man uses leather, PU and nylon. A PU business-card holder (2.5x12.5cm), one of the company's most popular items, sells for HK$22-25 (US$2.82-3.21) FOB Hong Kong. Among smoking accessories, the best seller is a nylon cigarette case (9x6.5x2.5cm) for ladies at HK$13-15 (US$1.67-1.92). Men's leather wallets (16x8cm) priced at HK$25-30 (US$3.21-3.85) also do well.
Germany and the Netherlands are Ping Man's major markets. "Our products suit Europe better than the US because we use PU and leather instead of PVC. We hope to expand into Japan because our quality control can match Japanese requirements," says manager Felix Leung.
Items in PU with imitation-reptile appearance are strong sellers, as are those featuring more decorative stitching, Leung adds.
The family-owned company has 220 workers producing 100,000-120,000 items monthly, mostly on a private-label basis, at its factory in Dongguan. Minimum order is 500-600 pieces per model. Shipment is 40-45 days after order confirmation.
Established in 1976, Evergreen Handbags Fty offers wallets, organisers, travel purses, coin purses, business-card cases, key-cases and handbags.
Wallets in a choice of leather, PVC or nylon are the main product line. Leather wallets (11.5x9.5cm for men and 16x12cm for ladies) generally cost US$2-10 while coin purses are US$0.50-2.50. Among products in nylon or PVC, wallets cost US$0.50-2.50 and coin purses cost US$0.30-1.50. All prices are FOB Hong Kong.
The company's factories in Dongguan and Bao An, both on the Chinese mainland, generate about 100,000 items monthly. "The Bao An factory focuses on high-end items while the one in Dongguan handles medium-priced products. We plan to move the Dongguan factory to Bao An so everything will be in one location," says marketing executive Simon Yu. Each factory employs 350 workers.
Evergreen's exports are evenly divided among Japan, Eastern and Western Europe, North and South America.
"Eastern Europeans and South Americans prefer traditional styles in black, brown or burgundy, but Japanese buyers like more colourful, fashion-sensitive goods. For Italy and Germany, we must ensure our wallets are the proper size for their driving licences," Yu says.
Minimum order is 1,000 pieces per model for shipment 45 days after order confirmation.
