December 20, 2006 - As birthdays go, this one is sure to be memorable. The
Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers' Contest turns 30 next year, celebrating the
gala occasion with the staging of the 2007 Contest finals, January 18, at the
Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The annual competition, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council
(TDC), has played a central role in developing Hong Kong's young design talent
since 1977. For some, it has been a glamorous springboard into the fashion world.
A number of past winners have become well-known designers sporting their own
brands and designer labels, including Barney Cheng, Pacino Wan, Cecilia Yau,
Richard Li and Harrison Wong.
At the contest's second presentation, held December 11, 16 finalists showed
their collections before a panel of judges. Contestants are competing in four
categories: Casual and Jeans Wear; Contemporary Day Wear; Avant-Garde Collections;
and Party Wear.
Presiding over the high-profile judging panel is Andrew Leung, chairman of
TDC's Garment Advisory Committee. Other panel members include Boby Chan, chairman
and managing director of Moiselle International Holdings Ltd; David Tang, founder
of Shanghai Tang; Joanna Chu-liao, fashion director of Flair by JOC; Tom Hung,
deputy editor-in-chief of Milk Magazine; Wing Shya, photographer; Wyman Wong,
lyricist and columnist; Charlie Young, artist and image consultant; Eunis Chan,
model; and fashion designers Barney Cheng and Henry Lau.
"This show is very helpful for the industry in identifying new talent,"
said Moiselle's Boby Chan. "By viewing their collections on stage in a
short time, we know who can best manipulate materials, styling and cutting to
bring out a design concept perfectly."
As an ex-winner, fashion designer Barney Cheng knows the value of the Young
Fashion Designers' Contest: "This is a very good experience and a chance
for exposure. Winning also boosts your confidence, enabling you to stand out
from the crowd when meeting buyers from overseas markets."
Designer Henry Lau is impressed with the overall design standard of the contestants
and the creativity they have shown in conception and colour combination. His
view was shared by artist Charlie Young. "From the themes and materials
selected by the contestants, I can see that their thinking is original."
The Contest concludes on the last day of Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter
and World Boutique, Hong Kong. A total of 10 awards will be presented: Overall
Winner; Casual and Jeans Wear Group Winner; Avant-Garde Collections Group Winner;
Contemporary Day Wear Group Winner; Party Wear Group Winner; Li Ning Prize for
the Most Stylish Sport Fashion; Moiselle Prize for the Best Silhouette; Milk
Magazine Prize for the Most Innovative Design; YD Alumni Club Prize; and Photographer's
Prize for the Most Outstanding Collection.
To celebrate the Contest's 30th anniversary, a YD Alumni fashion party will
take place, January 5, 2007, at Lanna Thai Cuisine, 11/F, Times Square. At the
party, 30 past finalists will present their creative collections under a theme
spotlighting fashion's stylish evolution from the 1970s to the 21st century.
